ABSTRACT

Currently, as lonely death cases of the elderly living alone in Korea has increased, lonely death is considered not as a problem of individual family members but as a social problem. So far, however, academic or policy interest or research on the lonely death is not actively studied. It is predicted that lonely death cases will be on the increase in accordance with the increasing number of the elderly living alone in Korea. Given Korean circumstances of rapid aging speed which is unprecedented in the world, the measures at the national level are urgent. In order to analyze the actual effects of lonely death prevention project programs on depression of elderly people, this study was carried out through research meathods of observation and interview. The results disclosed that the elderly living alone who were using institutions such as welfare centers had lower loneliness than those not using the institutions. Therefore, it was revealed that maintaining outdoor activities and interpersonal relationships had a great influence on loneliness, and that the existence of active leisure activities had a significant effect on the loneliness of the elderly living alone. For the sake of the leisure and cultural life of the elderly living alone, expansion of facilities, development of programs, activation of the participation, and customized support services for single men living alone are required through convergence and integration.
